Iraq has entered the countdown stage to provide the citizens' electrical energy needs, as the country will witness great suffering during the summer, due to the failure to solve the problem and settle financial disputes between Iraq and Iran.
Al-Sabah newspaper says that the government is currently working to raise electricity production to 22,000 megawatts during the coming summer, by maintaining a number of generating units in Salah al-Din, Nasiriyah, Samawah, and al-Musayb stations and others.
Iraq needs 29,000 megawatts to provide electricity over a 24-hour period, which means a deficit of 7,000 megawatts, and in the event that the Iranian side threatens to cut off gas and electricity because of the failure to settle the money, which means losing another 5,000 megawatts, and Iraq's production becomes less than 17,000 Megawatts per day.
So far, Iraq has not connected its electricity with any country such as Jordan, Egypt and the Gulf states, to diversify its electricity imports.
A spokesman for the Ministry of Electricity, Ahmed Al-Abadi, said that Iraq's production currently stands at 11.8,000 megawatts, and if fuel is available, we will reach 28,000 megawatts, indicating that if the imported fuel is stable, then Iraq's summer production reaches 22,000 megawatts.
And he indicated that Iraq imports 70 million cubic meters of gas from Iran during the summer, but Iran refuses to grant us that, as discussions are now on importing 22 million standard cubic meters, explaining that the electricity has maintained a number of electrical stations.
He noted that electricity requires state institutions 3 trillion dinars.
The Iraqi government began to find serious solutions to address the gas crisis by investing in gas associated with oil production in addition to importing gas from Qatar.
