The head of the authority, Omar Al-Waeli, said in a statement that the Al-Furat News Agency received a copy of it, "According to the directives of Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi and in conjunction with the approaching month of Ramadan, and in order to reduce the burden on citizens, and after a group of vegetables witnessed a rise in prices, the Ministry of Agriculture directed On presenting the issue of excluding some materials to the Ministerial Council for the Economy next Monday, to allow an exception (tomatoes, eggplant, and cucumbers) from the ban for a limited period and their entry from all border outlets, in order to make an abundance of these materials within the local markets.
He pointed out that "there is continuous follow-up to this issue with the Minister of Agriculture in order to aid citizens and respond to the demands of importers."
And the Minister of Agriculture, Muhammad Karim al-Khafaji, had instructed yesterday, Thursday, to open the legal import of the tomato crop, based on the powers in force to prevent and open imports and in light of the abundance and scarcity of the local agricultural product.
Agriculture said in a statement that "according to what was stated in the Cabinet / Economic Affairs Committee book, approval was obtained to open the import of the tomato crop, and from all border outlets, in quantified quantities of fifty thousand tons, for a limited period and starting from 4/8/2021."
It indicated that "the process of opening the legal import of tomatoes came to meet the consumer's need during this period, and to address the scarcity of the product between the autumn and spring chains for a period of twenty days only, coinciding with the advent of the blessed month of Ramadan."
