{Reports: Al Furat News} The Great Nuri Mosque in the city of Mosul, in northern Iraq, is an icon of the city that was destroyed during the military operations launched by Iraqi forces against ISIS in 2017.
The al-Nuri Mosque was built during the reign of Nur al-Din Zangi in the sixth century AH (9 centuries ago) and was named after his name. Before its bombing, the mosque is famous for its "humpback" beacon leaning towards the east. The only Friday he appeared on was in July 2014.
Months ago, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) announced the initiation of the reconstruction of the Nuri Mosque, and put forward an international competition to submit architectural designs for its reconstruction, but the results of the competition announced on April 16 revealed that an Egyptian engineering team won the award. , Which angered the Mosulists, because they see that the presented design contradicts the unique architectural designs of the Old City, and that would change the historical image of Mosul.
    The design problem
About 120 engineering teams from different countries of the world participated in the competition organized by UNESCO, 7 of them from Iraq, according to Mosul architect Hosnia Zarzis, who participated in the competition.
Zarzis reveals in a press interview, that her team adhered to all standards and conditions put forward by UNESCO, which obligated all teams to provide designs inspired by the traditional architecture of the city of Mosul while preserving the authenticity of the mosque, as well as the necessity of using local building materials and taking into account its reconstruction according to the situation it was in. Before 2017.
Zarzis confirms that her team was deceived, as she worked with her team to prepare the designs for a period of no less than 4 months, and then he was surprised that UNESCO did not adopt any of the criteria that it emphasized in the terms of the competition, according to it.
Regarding the defects that Zarzis sees in the winning design, it confirms that it contradicts the ancient civilization of Mosul, which is unique in its alleys and its special character in the use of stone and plaster in its construction, as well as the characteristic of its internal architectural closure that characterizes all the buildings of the city.
Zarzis expressed her shock at the winning design, which came in a modernist architectural style (as far as she described), which represents an attack on the symbolism of the Al-Nuri Mosque, stressing that the Al-Hadba lighthouse was not part of the competition, and that it has a separate special project.
For his part, al-Mosul archaeologist Junaid al-Fakhri confirmed in a press interview that the winning design, which he described as "the cubic", does not have anything to do with Mosul and its civilization and engineering, and that the approved modern design is far from Mosul, pointing out that the responsibility for this is borne by government agencies, the Ministry of Culture and Antiquities, and the Endowment Office. Sunni.
Al-Fakhry reveals that 3 teams from Mosul who participated in the competition adopted the criteria stipulated in UNESCO's determinants, but none of them won.
He pointed out that the competition did not adopt the principle of the qualifiers, but rather the winning team was chosen from among dozens of designs, criticizing the jury, whose members were supposed to be all Iraqis, and specifically Mosulians, according to his opinion.
    Contingent opinion
In response to critics of the UNESCO prize winning design, Ahmed Al-Omari, head of the architecture department at the University of Mosul and one of the jury members in the UNESCO competition (consisting of 9 members, including two Iraqis) confirms that the designs submitted in the competition were confidential, and the jury does not know the nationalities of the sponsors.
Regarding the design and the confusion that was raised around him, Al-Omari assures Al-Jazeera Net that the winning design mimics the architectural style of the old city, revealing that the old site of the mosque will keep its design as it is.
He pointed out that the winning design - which came in the form described as "cubic" - is for recently developed buildings, including the library, museum, the Nuri school, and the Higher Institute of Islamic Arts.
Al-Omari defends the winning design, stressing that it connects the past with the present, and that the building will be with the bricks and ornaments used in the wrapping of the al-Hadba lighthouse, indicating that the design takes into account the functional and visual aspects of the mosque, in addition to its consistency with the fabric of the old Mosul and integration with the urban context and heritage alleys, according to him.
The city’s design and civilization contradict for these reasons. The Mosulans reject the UNESCO’s plan to reconstruct the Mosque of al-Nuri
And the UNESCO in Iraq refused to comment on the subject.
The Great Mosque of al-Nuri in the city of Mosul, in northern Iraq, is an icon of the city that was destroyed during the military operations launched by Iraqi forces against ISIS in 2017.
By going to the Sunni Endowment Office (a government institution) responsible for mosques in Iraq, Abu Bakr Kanaan, director of the Sunni Endowment in Mosul, confirms that despite the great confusion that was raised about the winning design, he confirms that the arbitration committee decided that this team would win according to his engineering specialization, he said.
Kanaan comments that the endowment confirmed that the campus of the Nuri Mosque and the Al-Hadba minaret were of the old style, which was achieved in the winning design, indicating that the additions developed in the buildings such as the Nuri School, the Museum and the Institute of Arts will be with a modern architectural design.
He added that the Sunni endowment has the power to intervene and supervise the reconstruction of the mosque and its minaret in a manner that does not contradict the architectural design that the mosque was in before its 2017 bombing.
