On Monday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs denied inviting the President of the Syrian regime, Bashar al-Assad, to participate in the summit of regional leaders at the end of this month.
The denial was issued following leaks that indicated that Faleh al-Fayyad, head of the Popular Mobilization Committee, had invited Assad to attend the summit in the capital, Baghdad.
The ministry stated in a statement, August 16, that "some media outlets have reported that the Iraqi government has submitted an invitation to the Syrian government to participate in the summit meeting of neighboring countries to be held at the end of this month in Baghdad, and the government confirms that it is not interested in this invitation."
The statement added, "Official invitations are sent by an official letter and in the name of the State of the Iraqi Prime Minister, and no other party has the right to submit the invitation on behalf of the Iraqi government, so clarification is required."
Sources said earlier, that Faleh al-Fayyad arrived Monday morning in the Syrian capital, Damascus, and met Bashar al-Assad and handed him an official invitation from Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kazemi, to attend the Baghdad summit of neighboring countries.
