Today, Saturday, the Ministry of Commerce denied the existence of a rise in food prices, while it announced, in figures, the size of the quantities distributed to citizens of wheat, rice, sugar and oil.
Trade spokesman, Muhammad Hanoun, said in a statement to the official agency, followed by the “National News Center”: “The supervisory bodies in the Ministry of Commerce did not record any noticeable increase in the local market in food prices, but on the contrary recorded a decrease in some prices of materials, especially those processed by them.” The Ministry of Commerce through the food basket consisting of legumes, tomato paste, rice and flour.
Regarding the rise in flour prices, Hanoun explained, “What happened was due to the lack of animal feed available in the local market and not allowing the supply or processing of the material to livestock breeders,” noting that “some people who receive flour within the ration card sell it through Citizens move between neighborhoods to buy it, and they sell these quantities to speculators at prices in the local market, and the rise occurs.”
He stressed, "The ministry continues to supply flour within the scheduled meals, and it has no problem, whether in the mechanisms of flour production or the mechanisms of preparing wheat material to agents through private mills."
He pointed out that "the ministry has joint teams with the Department of Economic Crime and National Security after the Prime Minister's directive, which in turn seized quantities of flour that moved between governorates," explaining that "the teams follow the local market and check prices and qualities."

And Hanoun added, “We categorically deny the existence of a rise in food prices. On the contrary, our supervisory teams note that there has been a decrease in the event of processing the food basket items that the ministry prepares for more than 39 to 40 million Iraqis.”
He pointed out that "trade distributes more than 450 thousand tons of wheat, more than 120 to 125 thousand tons of rice, in addition to distributing more than 80,000 tons of sugar, as well as processing more than 39 to 40 thousand tons of sugar.
