Shafaq News/ The Progress Alliance, led by Muhammad al-Halbousi, renewed on Friday its adherence to renewing the mandate of its president as an electoral entitlement that resulted from the results of the elections that took place last October.
The leader of the coalition, Fahd Al-Rashed, told Shafak News Agency, "The parliament presidency will not depart from the Alliance of Progress, as it comes second within the official hierarchy according to the election results announced by the Electoral Commission." some independent representatives.
Al-Rashed added: "We have received explicit requests from independent representatives of their desire to join (Progress), and most of them hail from the western (Sunni) regions," noting that "the matter does not stop at that, there are Shiite and Kurdish MPs who do not belong to any current or party. Joining the Al-Halbousi coalition, and it will be announced officially after the Federal Court’s approval of the results.”
He explained that "all the political and popular Sunni parties believe that (Al-Halbousi) is the right man to head the parliament, as he has proven successful in this during his administration of the previous session, as well as the desire of the political parties (Shia and Kurds) to restore confidence again in the person of Al-Halbousi in the presidency of the new parliament, and this does not mean quotas as much as it is an electoral entitlement.”
Regarding the nomination of Sunni candidates from outside the parliament, Al-Rashed stressed, “It is the right of any winning party in the elections to present its candidate for the position stipulated within the political custom of the Sunnis, and therefore the issue of granting confidence by the representatives and political forces to the candidate closest or most suitable in implementing the program remains. The national government,” adding, “We, as progress, have no candidate for the presidency of Parliament except (Al-Halbousi).”
