Baghdad / Hussein Hatem
Despite the succession of 6 ministers of electricity and spending tens of billions of dollars since 2003 until now, the crisis is still intractable, accompanied by government promises of improving energy that end in lack of seriousness, knowing that the country's actual need of electricity is estimated at about 30 thousand megawatts.
Most areas of the capital, Baghdad, and other governorates have witnessed a near-constant power outage in recent days, as processing hours have reached their lowest level.
This interruption usually occurs with the arrival of temperatures and coldness to the peak, due to the large consumption of energy, as a result of the operation of cooling and heating devices due to the high or significant decrease in temperatures according to the seasons of the year. A spokesman for the Ministry of Electricity, Ahmed Al-Abadi, indicated that “the decline in Iranian gas emissions supplied to production stations, and the entry of the obstetric units under emergency and periodic maintenance to prepare for the next summer, greatly affected the renewal of the system’s loads and led to the loss of approximately 8 thousand megawatts between gas declines and periodic maintenance.” and forced," noting that "this reason led to a decrease in the hours of supplying electricity."
Al-Abadi added that his ministry is "constantly negotiating with the Iranian side, and coordinating at a high level with the Ministry of Oil to compensate for the alternative fuel plan."
He added that "a suspension that occurred a few days ago for the North Gas Refinery greatly affected the system, as nearly 5 stations from the North stopped," noting that "the refinery has returned to work." And the ministry's spokesman demanded, "the disbursement of financial allocations for the benefit of the Ministry of Electricity to keep pace with demand and complete strategic projects."
Al-Abadi went on to say, “The ministry’s cadres began installing mobile stations in Sadr City, east of the canal, and load areas to relieve the loads on the network, which caused a decrease in processing hours to areas east of the capital,” adding that “those works are continuing, some of them are finished, others are under completion, and the goal is to alleviate the bottlenecks in some of them.” The capital areas are being completed.”
About a week ago, the Iranian ambassador to Iraq, Iraj Masjedi, confirmed during his meeting with the person in charge of the duties of the Minister of Electricity, Adel Karim, that his country's government is interested in cooperating with Iraq, noting that it has a specific capacity of electricity to pass to Iraq on a commercial basis and does not have a large surplus.
A statement issued by the Ministry of Electricity at the time stated, “During a meeting with Karim and Masjedi, a discussion took place on gas supplies from the Iranian side to maintain the momentum of work at production stations, and maintenance of broken transformers, and that there are a number of topics discussed related to gas rates, the first is the possibility of reducing prices, and the second is the issue of fines.” Noting that "there is a contract signed between the two parties that stipulates the need to abide by its terms." In turn, the oil expert Hamza Al-Jawahiri told Al-Mada that "the sums that were spent on electricity in Iraq went to the corrupt and were not invested properly."
Al-Jawahiri added, "The most important issue is that if Iraq remains subject to Iranian gas, it will never produce gas and electricity will not be stable in it." He pointed out, "There is a great deterioration in planning and management, and there are arms that control the energy field in the country."
Iraq relies on Iranian gas to operate electric power plants, as it obtains periodic exceptions from Washington to import Iranian gas, given the economic sanctions imposed on it.
