Kurdistan Democratic Party: Our position is firm regarding the presidency
Shafaq News/ Representative Vian Dakhil, the official spokesman for the Kurdistan Democratic Party bloc, confirmed on Tuesday that the party is consistent in its position on the position of President of the Republic and its candidate, Reber Ahmed, Minister of Interior for this position.
Dakhil said in a statement today, "We are proceeding with our partners and allies in this direction and are open to all other parties that are interested in reaching a solution to this political blockage and proceeding with the formation of the government in the interest of the country and the Iraqi people with all its spectrum."
And the Iraqi parliament, in its new session, failed to nominate a president for the Republic of Iraq over the past period.
The Kurdistan Democratic Party had announced the candidacy of the region's Interior Minister, Riber Ahmed, for the position of the presidency of the Iraqi Republic, to enter into competition mainly with the candidate of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, the current president, Barham Salih, whose candidacy sparked differences between the two parties.
The Democratic Party says that the Union nominated Saleh for the position without the consent of the rest of the Kurdish forces, which prompted him to put forward a candidate from his side to fill the position.
According to the political custom followed throughout the previous sessions, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan has held the position of President of the Republic since the overthrow of the previous regime in 2003.
But in terms of numbers, the fact that the Kurdistan Democratic Party won 31 parliamentary seats in the recent legislative elections, compared to only 17 seats for the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, may reverse the equation this time.
