    [size=45]On Monday, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced the appointment of Claudio Cordone, an Italian national, as the new Deputy Political Affairs and Electoral Assistance for the Special Representative of the Secretary-General at the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).[/size]
    [size=45]Cordone succeeds Ingebjörg Solron Geshladottir, an Icelandic, who recently completed her duties.[/size]
    [size=45]Cordone comes to the position with more than 35 years of experience in international relations, international human rights and humanitarian law, including his experience as Director of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in Lebanon, where he held this position since a year 2017.[/size]
    [size=45]During this period, he also held, for a short period, the position of Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator in Lebanon on a temporary basis. Prior to that (2013-2017), he was Director of the Human Rights, Transitional Justice and Rule of Law Division of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, as well as a representative of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in that country.[/size]
    [size=45]Cordone previously worked for the International Center for Transitional Justice (ICTJ) and spent more than 25 years working with Amnesty International in multiple capacities, including as an interim Secretary-General for six months in 2010.[/size]
    [size=45]From 1997-1998, he also served as Director of the Human Rights Office at the United Nations Mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina.[/size]
    [size=45]Cordone holds a law degree from Sapienza University in Rome, and a Master of Arts in Arabic Studies from Georgetown University in Washington, DC, and speaks English, French, Italian, and Arabic.[/size]
