Today, Tuesday, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres announced the appointment of Ghulam Muhammad Izakzai, of Afghanistan, as the new Deputy Special Representative for Iraq and Resident Coordinator for Humanitarian Affairs. This was stated in a statement issued by his spokesman's office.
He succeeds Mr. Isakzai of Germany, Irina Vuyashkova-Solorano, for whom the Secretary-General expressed his gratitude for her leadership and dedicated service during her tenure.
Three decades of experience
Mr. Isakzai brings to this position more than 28 years of experience in preventive diplomacy, complex humanitarian and development situations, recovery and peacebuilding. He is currently the Temporary Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator in Jordan since January 2022.
Mr. Isakzai previously held the position of Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Afghanistan to the United Nations in New York. Prior to that, he served as Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan (2016-2021) and in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, known as North Korea (2013-2015).
He also served as Resident Representative for the United Nations Development Program and Resident Representative for the United Nations Population Fund.
Familiar with the affairs of the Arab region,
and from 1997 to 2013, he held several political, development and humanitarian positions with the United Nations system in Germany, Nepal, Afghanistan, Syria, Yemen and Iraq, including the position of Deputy Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Program in Nepal and Head of Programs Department at the Volunteers Program The United Nations in Bonn.
Mr. Isaaczai holds a Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy from The Fletcher School, Tufts University in Boston, and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Midland University in Nebraska.
