Shafaq News / A network of Kurdish organizations supporting accession to the Rome Treaty formed by the International Criminal Court demanded today, Saturday, that Iraq officially join the court to ensure that genocide crimes such as Halabja and Anfal do not occur, and while it called for the inclusion of the Yazidi file and the accountability of the ideology that promotes ISIS within the framework of this court, parliamentarians confirmed their support to these demands.
The Kurdistan Network of Organizations in Support of Accession to the Treaty of Rome, which constitutes the International Criminal Court, and organizations active in the field of genocide and Anfal in Sulaymaniyah, held a gathering at the Iraqi Parliament’s office in Sulaymaniyah on the occasion of the International Criminal Court’s announcement day.
Civil activist Shorsh Amin, a member of the network, said in a press conference attended by Shafak News Agency, "The Kurdistan Regional Government was unable to refer the crime of the chemical attack on Halabja to the court through its representatives, and we also demand the arrest of those involved in the Anfal campaign."
The civil activist called for "to bring to justice anyone who promotes the ideology of ISIS," calling on the Kurdistan Regional Government to "intensify its efforts through government representation in the member countries of that court, make the Yazidis file among the genocide files and bring the perpetrators to justice."
"As the International Day of Justice approaches, genocide groups and activists in Iraq are calling for compliance with the Rome Statute in order to demonstrate good faith not to repeat the crime of genocide," Amin added.
In turn, MP Muthanna Amin said during the conference, "We support these demands, and the central and regional governments should seek to join the Rome Agreement formed by the International Criminal Court by making the file of Halabja and Anfal among the files of genocide."
123 countries ratified the Rome Statute, which was adopted 24 years ago on July 17, 1998, and Iraq ratified it in 2005, but later withdrew without reason, and according to observers, Iraq’s withdrawal came because there were no legal structures that would allow it to join such agreements or international treaties.
The International Criminal Court was established on July 1, 2002, and if Iraq becomes a member of the court, all those accused of crimes committed in Iraq and against Iraqis can be tried.
