Basra promises people with disabilities to meet their educational requests and grant them plots of land

The local government in Basra promised to give special attention to people with disabilities, to meet their demands related to education, to grant them plots of land, in addition to finding special places for them in roads, parks and bridges, and to include this in future projects.
And local media in Basra reported that “a dialogue workshop was held to discuss the challenges and obstacles of women and people with special needs, by a civil society association in the province, with the support of the European Union and under the supervision of the Bridge to Italy organization, and in partnership with the United Nations Development Program.”
The deputy governor of Basra, Hassan al-Najjar, said, according to press statements followed by (Al-Mada), that “the local administration has listened to the demands put forward by this segment, which is an important part of the province of Basra and Iraq.”
Al-Najjar indicated that “some of these demands will be met quickly, while other requests will be met through official letters to the relevant authorities.”
He pointed out, “There is a previous directive by the governor stipulating that future projects include places designated for people with disabilities, whether in relation to bridges, roads, parks, or others.”
Al-Najjar emphasized, “The importance of completing a special study for girls with disabilities to facilitate their inclusion in schools for the deaf, dumb, and blind, and in other schools that sponsor this segment.”
And he stressed, "coordination with Basra Education to overcome difficulties with regard to their participation in external exams, pointing to the follow-up of other demands, including those related to plots of land."
For his part, Faris Hassan al-Sharifi, the head of the Al-Dura Association, said in statements to local media, followed by (Al-Mada), that “the workshop is part of a series of similar events, aiming to know the challenges that people with disabilities suffer from, as well as the rest of the youth groups in society.”
Al-Sharifi affirmed, "We have reached solutions and recommendations in this regard, some of which have been applied on the ground by the local government."
He pointed out, "The local administration promised that there will be future solutions for the rest of the points, including the establishment of other workshops in preparation for work in their own center."
A number of people with disabilities who attended the workshop said that they are demanding that they have a building (a special department) to follow up and complete their transactions, such as medical reports and annual statements that are required by their committees, instead of going to several departments, as this will increase their suffering and financial burden.
They also talked about the suffering of the blind segment in their mixing with society and their exposure to bullying, and the lack of attention to them by the teaching staff and students and during exams that need someone to help them write the answers, in addition to the mishandling of them in some departments.
And a parliamentary statement received by (Al-Mada) had stated, “Last week, First Deputy Speaker of Parliament Mohsen Al-Mandalawi presided over an expanded meeting of the Labor Committee and parliamentary civil society organizations, during which it hosted the Minister of Labor Ahmed Al-Asadi, and the head of the People with Disabilities Authority Ahmed Al-Bunna to discuss the law on caring for people with disabilities. and special needs.”
Al-Mandalawi stressed, according to the statement, that the segment of the disabled and people with special needs has suffered a lot during the past decades.
Mandalawi stressed that "the House of Representatives should be one of its first steps to take care of this patient segment and treat it fairly by enacting a law that guarantees its right to a decent life, as well as providing specialized institutions concerned with their rehabilitation and integration into society."
According to the statement, the meeting exchanged “proposals with the relevant authorities to include them in the People with Disabilities and Special Needs Law, add some amendments to the texts of the law and put the final touches on it before including it on the agenda of the House of Representatives to vote on it.”
