[rtl][You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and regional parties called on [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] , at the summit that concluded its work in Jordan, on Tuesday, to move away from the Iranian axis in order to solve the multiple crises affecting the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] .[/rtl]
[rtl]The "Baghdad 2" conference was held yesterday, Tuesday, at the King Hussein bin Talal Convention Center on the Dead Sea coast (50 km west of Amman), after a first session that was held in the Iraqi capital in August 2021 at the initiative of French President Emmanuel Macron and Iraq.[/rtl]
[rtl]In their closing statement, the participants affirmed that they would continue to "cooperate with Iraq to support its stability, sovereignty, and democratic process in this country," which emerged from a political crisis that lasted more than a year. Expressing their support for "Iraq's efforts to devote dialogue as a means to resolving regional crises."[/rtl]
[rtl]Peanut test[/rtl]
[rtl]The conference constitutes a test for the new Iraqi Prime Minister, Muhammad Shia al-Sudani, whose appointment came after a political stalemate that passed for more than a year, and is considered closer to Iran than his predecessor, Mustafa al-Kadhimi.[/rtl]
[rtl]In his speech during the conference, the French President called on Iraq to follow another path, far from "a model dictated from abroad," in reference to Iran, which enjoys great influence in this country.[/rtl]
[rtl]Macron said, "I want to assure you of France's adherence, throughout its history and diplomatic work, to the stability of the region," calling for following "a path far from forms of domination and imperialism, and from a model dictated from outside."[/rtl]
[rtl]He added, "Iraq today is a scene of influences, incursions, and destabilization linked to the entire region," without mentioning Iran, whose foreign minister is attending the conference.[/rtl]
[rtl]And with the pro-Iranian parties taking control of the parliament in Iraq and the establishment of a government from this majority, Iran, which Al-Sudani visited at the end of November, is strengthening its grip on this country.[/rtl]
[rtl]Tehran is also involved militarily in Syria, where it supports the regime of President Bashar al-Assad, backs the Houthi rebels in Yemen, and wields influence in Lebanon mired in a political crisis through Hezbollah.[/rtl]
[rtl]Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, who participated in the summit, stressed in his speech that "Egypt confirms its rejection of any foreign interference in Iraq's affairs."[/rtl]
[rtl]Strengthening regional cooperation[/rtl]
[rtl]For his part, the Iraqi Prime Minister affirmed in his speech that "Iraq adheres to building close and balanced relations of cooperation with all regional and international partners, distances itself from the alignment of axes and the atmosphere of escalation, and implements the policy of calm and reducing tensions."[/rtl]

[rtl]For his part, Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan affirmed, "Saudi Arabia reaffirms its total rejection of any aggression against any inch of Iraqi territory. It also reaffirms its standing together with the brothers in Iraq in the fight against terrorism and extremism and anyone who seeks destruction, ruin and fomenting divisions."[/rtl]
[rtl]For his part, Jordan's King Abdullah II said in his speech, which included paragraphs in French, that "the challenges facing us are many and getting more complex, but we also believe that this conference is held in order to serve our common interests, to ensure Iraq's security, prosperity and stability are a cornerstone of our region." Referring to "Iraq's pivotal and major role in the region and in converging views to enhance regional cooperation."[/rtl]
[rtl]Suppression of demonstrations in Iran[/rtl]
[rtl]On the sidelines of the summit, the European Union's foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, announced that he had met with Iranian Foreign Minister Hussein Amir Abdollahian, on Tuesday in Amman, and asked him to stop suppressing demonstrations in Iran and end military support to Russia.[/rtl]
[rtl]This meeting comes at a time when the nuclear negotiations between Tehran and the major powers have reached a dead end.[/rtl]
[rtl]The meeting was attended by the European Union coordinator for these talks, Enrique Mora, and Ali Bagheri, the chief Iranian negotiator, according to an Iranian diplomatic source.[/rtl]
[rtl]"I stressed the need to immediately end military support to Russia and internal repression in Iran," Borrell said, in a tweet.[/rtl]
[rtl]For his part, the Iranian minister advised the Europeans to "adopt a constructive and realistic approach in order to re-launch the nuclear agreement," according to the same source.[/rtl]
[rtl]Western countries accuse Iran of providing drones, which Russia uses to target energy facilities in Ukraine, as part of the ongoing conflict since February. Several parties, including Washington and the European Union, imposed additional sanctions on Tehran because of this file.[/rtl]
[rtl]In 2015, Iran concluded with major powers (the United States, France, Britain, Russia, China, and Germany) an agreement regarding its nuclear program that allowed the lifting of sanctions in return for reducing its activities and ensuring the peacefulness of its program. However, the United States withdrew from it in 2018, and re-imposed sanctions on Iran, which responded by gradually retracting most of its commitments.[/rtl]
[rtl]On Tuesday, French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna called on her Iranian counterpart to "immediately release" the French "hostages" held by Iran, respect "civil and political rights" in this country and "stop interference" in the affairs of neighboring countries.[/rtl]
[rtl]hostages held by Iran[/rtl]
[rtl]"I spoke with him (the Iranian minister) briefly in the summit hall to ask him once again to release the hostages held by Iran and to fully respect international humanitarian law and international law in general," the French minister said during a press conference on the sidelines of the conference.[/rtl]
[rtl]According to the French authorities, there are seven Frenchmen detained in Iran, including schoolteacher and trade unionist Cecile Koller and her partner, Jacques Barry.[/rtl]
[rtl]In addition to the last two, who were arrested in early May when they were on a tourist visit to Iran, there is the French-Iranian researcher Fariba Adelkhah, who was arrested in June 2019, and then sentenced to five years in prison after being convicted of violating national security.[/rtl]
[rtl]There is also Benjamin Brier, who was arrested in May 2020 and sentenced to eight years and eight months in prison for espionage.[/rtl]
[rtl]On the agenda of Macron, who on Monday visited the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle off the coast of Egypt to celebrate the traditional Christmas with the French forces, is to meet Jordan's King Abdullah II, "an ally in the fight against terrorism" on Wednesday, according to Paris.[/rtl]
