    Baghdad today - Baghdad
Today, Thursday, the Ministry of Education denied that the illiteracy rate in Iraq had reached 47 percent.
The ministry's spokesman, Karim al-Sayed, said in a statement to the official agency, which was followed by (Baghdad Today), that "the ministry contacted UNESCO and they confirmed that these percentages may not be accurate," noting that "according to the data of the Ministry of Planning, the illiteracy rates in the country did not exceed 12." percent".
Al-Sayed added, "Iraq does not have statistics on population numbers, and therefore 100 percent accurate surveys cannot be conducted. Rather, they are subject to estimates and samples taken here and there," explaining, "Iraq went through circumstances and suffered a lot, but the illiteracy rate did not reach this extent."
Earlier, the director of the UNESCO office in Iraq, Paolo Fontani, said during the activities of the periodic education day, that "the conflicts that took place in the past decade affected children and their entry into schools, especially the quality of education, which is one of the challenges in Iraq." Stressing that "the share of education in Iraq is approximately 6 percent of the total annual general agreement."
He stressed "the need for a quality education that allows Iraqi pupils and students to enter the labor market and integrate into society, as well as continuing to support vocational, primary, intermediate and secondary education."
In recent years, Iraq recorded a significant increase in the level of illiteracy, and according to the classification of UNESCO, the country was ranked internationally in the quality of education and literacy during the seventies of the last century, and in the last classification of the organization, Iraq was among the countries that suffer most from high illiteracy, exceeding 47 percent.
