United Nations: Climate change exacerbates the challenges of water scarcity in Iraq

The United Nations Development Program has classified Iraq as one of the most water-stressed countries in the world.
The resident representative of the program in Iraq, Oki Lootsma, told Al-Sabah that the Iraqis are doing their part to be careful about water consumption, or at least they are making efforts to conserve water resources and make the best use of them, citing the example of young entrepreneurs who have come up with solutions. Innovative to use less water in agriculture, while ensuring vegetation growth. Lotsma added that Iraq was classified as one of the most water-stressed countries in the world, explaining that climate change will exacerbate the challenges of water scarcity in Iraq.
He pointed out that water use efficiency is the main recommendation of Prime Minister Muhammad Shia al-Sudani at the Third Baghdad Water Conference and the technical priority of the Ministry of Water Resources, noting that Iraq will witness the start of implementing the government's water measurement program, which is indeed a step forward.
He pointed out that the United Nations Development Program will continue to support farmers in the north and south, as it will provide them with modern irrigation tools and pumps that rely on solar energy to enhance water efficiency, maximize economic benefits and reduce harmful environmental impacts in Iraq at the same time.
Lotsma added that, according to government estimates, with an increase in temperature by 1 degree Celsius, it will lead to a decrease in precipitation by 10 percent by 2050, which results in a 20 percent decrease in available fresh water, indicating that under these conditions the water will not reach Almost a third of the land is irrigated by 2050, and this in turn threatens food security in Iraq, and people's livelihoods, especially those who work in agriculture. And he believed that without an integrated approach in terms of public policies for climate, food and water security, the ability of the agricultural sector to fill the food basket in Iraq and create job opportunities will be in grave danger, noting that the government has a major role in ensuring efforts to increase water efficiency in the country, in addition to Citizens' commitment to rationalizing their water consumption and using modern agricultural technologies.
