The Presidency of the Republic adopted a media project to enhance the participation rate in the provincial council elections, while the Independent High Electoral Commission raised the ceiling of penalties to “exclude” the candidate in the event of repeated violations during electoral propaganda.
In an interview with Al-Sabah, Karim Al-Tamimi, Advisor to the President of the Republic for Election Affairs, explained that the media is very important in enhancing the participation rate in the electoral process, indicating the agreement with the media channels to launch a workshop on the necessity of adopting a media project to enhance the participation rate in the elections.
He added that marketing the electoral process is one of the tasks of the media and is not limited to the Independent High Electoral Commission in the campaigns it carries out only, indicating that next week will witness an expanded meeting with satellite channels to develop an integrated program to support the Electoral Commission to launch a media campaign aimed at raising the participation rate in the council elections. Governorates, which will take place on the eighteenth of next December. Al-Tamimi continued that there are meetings with minorities and representatives of the indigenous components of society, to give a message of reassurance and interest to this segment to ensure their participation in the elections, and to elect their representatives in a real way, noting that there is an integrated program related to the Kirkuk Governorate elections, which were postponed more than once during the previous years, pointing out that This governorate will receive the attention of the Presidency of the Republic, through meetings with all the basic components in Kirkuk with the aim of maintaining peaceful coexistence and adopting constructive national dialogue.
In turn, legal expert Saad Al-Bukhati pointed out, in an interview with Al-Sabah, that the Independent High Electoral Commission has set conditions and mechanisms and issued instructions in order to respect the electoral and organizational situation, pointing out the necessity of strengthening the culture of legitimate competition.
Al-Bukhati stressed the need for everyone to understand the mechanisms, conditions and instructions of the Commission and not to transgress them, as it has established penal penalties for anyone who violates these conditions and instructions, including large financial fines that may lead to the exclusion of the candidate from the elections in the event of repeated violations during electoral propaganda.
Due to the violations, the Ministry of Labor decided to close the “Mazalaty” platform until after the elections, to prevent candidates from exploiting citizens and misleading beneficiaries by showing their names in the sixth social welfare salary package.
The Iraqi provincial council elections are scheduled to be held on December 18, 2023, in 15 governorates excluding the Kurdistan Region, and about 23 million Iraqis are entitled to vote in these elections.
