    Hussein Faleh:
Iraq is moving towards developing the capabilities of its army in all its branches by providing it with advanced weapons, especially air defense and aviation, to confront any attacks on the country's sovereignty.
The head of the Security Media Cell, Major General Pilot Tahseen Al-Khafaji, said in an interview: Iraq is working to develop its air capabilities by concluding contracts with advanced countries. He indicated: The latest contracts in the field of air defense are with the South Korean side, the M-SAM system, this system will contribute to developing air defense capabilities.
He added: The Army Aviation Command has contracted to purchase advanced and advanced Caracal aircraft that are characterized by performance, capabilities and capacities, stressing: All of this falls within the ongoing contracts and providing the funds for that.
The M-SAM-II system is known in South Korea as Cheongung-II, and provides strong defense against enemy aircraft, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles.
This system relies on the "hit to kill" technology, where the killer vehicle intercepts incoming threats by colliding with them.
The air defense system also features an advanced radar to detect and track multiple targets simultaneously. It has an operational range of 40 kilometers (25 miles) and can hit incoming missiles at altitudes of up to 15 kilometers (9.3 miles).
South Korea is currently developing the M-SAM-III and L-SAM-II systems, which will boast enhanced capabilities.
On September 5, 2024, the Iraqi Ministry of Defense signed a formal agreement with Airbus Helicopters to purchase a fleet of 14 military helicopters, including 12 new H225M Caracal helicopters and two additional helicopters of a different type. The contract was signed in Baghdad and was attended by Iraqi Defense Minister Thabet Mohammed Saeed Al-Abbasi, French Ambassador Patrick Dorrell, and a representative from Airbus Helicopters. Deliveries are expected to begin in early 2025, according to the agreement.
For his part, Security Committee member Ali Al-Bandawi said in a statement: His committee met with a group of leaders of the Iraqi army branches, led by the Chief of Staff of the Army and the leaders of the security services in the Ministry of Defense, where they discussed and discussed the new security situation, especially after the Israeli attack on Iran. He stressed: The matter was discussed from the intelligence aspect and preparations of our armed forces.
He added: The recent breach requires the security services, the Ministry of Defense and the government, as well as the support of the Iraqi Parliament and the Parliamentary Security and Defense Committee, to develop the capabilities of the Iraqi army, most notably the air defense system. He indicated: We must have an advanced air defense system that keeps pace with the development taking place today in most countries of the world.
He continued: Most countries possess supersonic aircraft and missiles that are 5 or 6 times faster than sound, and we must be prepared, especially since Iraq is at the heart of the event. He stressed: We have a trained, strong and brave Iraqi army that fought dozens of battles to liberate the country, but we need sufficient allocations and funds for the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Interior.[/size]
