Today, Thursday (November 16, 2023), the Parliamentary Legal Committee revealed the date for choosing a new speaker for the Iraqi Council of Representatives, after the Federal Court’s decision to terminate the membership of former President Muhammad al-Halbousi.
A member of the Parliamentary Legal Committee, Arif Al-Hamami, told “Baghdad Al-Youm”: “The choice of the new Speaker of Parliament depends on the agreement of the Sunni political forces on an alternative candidate for Al-Halbousi,” indicating that “there is no specific date for that currently.”
He pointed out that "the Shiite political forces in the coordination framework will play a role in bringing the views of the Sunni political blocs closer together with the aim of accelerating the selection of a new president for the Iraqi parliament."
Earlier, the leader in the coordination framework, Turki Al-Atbi, ruled out that the Federal Court’s decision to terminate Al-Halbousi’s membership would lead to creating a political crisis in Iraq, indicating that “the position will remain for the Sunnis.”
Al-Utbi said in an interview with “Baghdad Today” that “the Federal Court implemented the law by terminating the membership of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Muhammad Al-Halbousi, which is the highest court in the country and its decisions are decisive,” stressing that “the Sunni forces now have options to put forward names to fill the position of Speaker of the Council, considering the position is one of the Its share is according to the political agreement.”
