    Baghdad Today - Baghdad
Iraq was absent from the list of the ten countries most affected by food inflation in the world, according to the latest report issued by the World Bank, which reflects the government’s continued success in confronting the food security challenge, according to specialists.
Egypt topped the list with 36%, Lebanon 31%, Rwanda 15%, while Suriname came in tenth place with 9%.
In the latest edition of the Commodity Market Outlook, the World Bank Fertilizer Price Index rose by 3% in the third quarter of 2023 compared to the previous quarter. This was primarily due to higher urea prices as a result of production disruptions and was only partially offset by lower phosphate and potash prices.
According to economic reports, the Iraqi government has allocated more than seven billion dollars annually to support the food basket program, which includes approximately 42 million Iraqis who receive food supplies at an import cost of $8 per month per person, while it is equivalent to $18 in local markets.
To support the poorest segments, the government allocates two additional food baskets annually for more than 3 million five hundred thousand people, in addition to distributing a food basket to each individual monthly, which includes flour, rice, cooking oil, and sugar, in addition to tomato paste and legumes. It helps families secure 10 out of the 30% that is the percentage. Families' monthly expenditure on food. According to economic reports and government data.
In an attempt to enhance food security, the Ministry of Commerce opened marketing centers to sell food products and commodities in various marketing centers in Baghdad and the governorates, at competitive prices for local markets, which prevents any opportunity for the prices of food commodities to rise.
