The Joint Operations Command announced today, Thursday, that the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani, approved the plan to secure local elections, while indicating that the plan does not include boycotts or imposing a curfew.
Deputy Commander of Joint Operations, Lieutenant General Qais al-Muhammadawi, said: “The provincial council elections are radically different from the parliamentary elections,” noting that “according to the plan and after the approval of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Muhammad Shia al-Sudani, we will work to ensure that there are no boycotts in the streets, whether inside Baghdad or All governorates.
He added, "Citizens' movement will be normal, except that there will be an official holiday," noting that "the plan does not include imposing a curfew in all governorates, but according to the data and developments on the ground, there may be a specific case that requires a curfew in a specific region, electoral center, or district." .
He stressed that "all the orders that reached the leaders from the Supreme Security Committee for the elections and the subcommittees do not include imposing a curfew, closing airports or border crossings, or curfews and blocking roads between the provinces," pointing out that "the plan for these elections will give a message about the security and stability of Iraq and will facilitate... The movement of citizens, whether for elections or for their personal interests.”
He stressed that "the upcoming elections are considered a national entitlement, as the special voting date is December 16th, while general voting will take place on December 18th."
He stated that "the security forces will be deployed widely, with a security and intelligence vision in place to secure all polling centers throughout the governorates of Iraq," expressing his hope that "the atmosphere will be safe for the citizen to cast his vote freely."
He stressed the need to "create a safe atmosphere and prevent those who attack candidates, electoral centers, or security halls in accordance with the law," explaining that "the issue of boycott and the issue of not voting is a matter that concerns the citizen."
He stated that "there is high coordination with the Election Commission," pointing out that "what distinguishes this plan is the repeated examinations of the Commission's devices and cards, as all things are moving in the normal direction."
