{International: Al-Furat News} The head of the United Nations Climate Conference {COP28}, Sultan Al-Jaber, announced today, Wednesday, the reaching of an agreement that he described as “historic,” at the conclusion of the conference held in the Emirati city of Dubai, which would push the countries of the world toward... Transitioning away from fossil fuels, as part of efforts to confront the climate change crisis.
During a press conference, Al-Jaber said that an agreement had been reached between the participating countries, while his announcement was met with applause from the audience.
He noted that the agreement represents a “historic package” of measures that provides a “strong plan” to achieve the goal of 1.5 degrees Celsius.
He also thanked the participating countries and said: “We worked during the night to reach a consensus, and the delegations showed flexibility and revealed efforts to reach an agreement.”
He added: "But we must be careful. The agreement is good when it is implemented. We are what we do, not what we say. We must take steps to transform the agreement into realistic actions."
The European Climate Commissioner, Wopke Hoekstra, said on Wednesday, before entering the plenary session of the conference, that COP 28 may represent “the beginning of the end for fossil fuels.”
He continued: "For the first time in 30 years, we can now approach the beginning of the end of fossil fuels. We are taking an important, very important step" to limit warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
Danish Climate Minister Dan Jorgensen, in statements reported by Agence France-Presse, also described the agreement as “historic progress.”
The agreement stipulates “the transition from fossil fuels in energy systems, in a fair, orderly and equitable manner, by accelerating action in this crucial decade to achieve carbon neutrality in 2050 in line with what science recommends.”
This call to accelerate action during the current decade was the demand of the European Union and many other countries.
