Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani directed the establishment of museums for national and cultural symbols, stressing that they “constitute the memory of Iraq.”
A statement from his office stated, “Today, Saturday, Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani opened the Museum and Center of the Sheikh Dr. Ahmed Al-Waeli in the Karkh area in Baghdad, which was completed by the Baghdad Municipality after it acquired the late man’s house at the initiative of his family, and completely rehabilitated it, while preserving its heritage character.” .
Al-Sudani toured, according to the statement, “throughout the museum, and looked at its halls, which included the legacy of Sheikh Al-Waeli, his books and personal belongings, his papers, blogs, manuscripts of his poems, pictures and recordings of the Sheikh during his stay in Syria and Kuwait, his meetings with sheikhs and scientific and cultural figures, and part of his personal library, which The rest of them are kept in the Holy Shrine of the Most High, all of which constitute prominent milestones in his life, which was rich in knowledge and culture.”
The statement continued, “Al-Sudani met with the family of Sheikh Al-Waeli, and directed that all development requirements be provided for the museum. He also directed that the Baghdad Municipality work to establish museums for the most prominent national and cultural figures who constitute the memory of Iraq and a prominent point in our contemporary history.”
Al-Sudani referred to “the impact of the late Al-Waili, his distinguished role as the dean of the Husseini pulpit, and his reformist rhetorical efforts calling for good morals and social peace.”
The statement noted that “the house began to be converted into a museum in agreement with the Sheikh’s family in 2014, and in 2023, in line with the government’s approach to preserving the cultural and heritage legacy of the capital, Baghdad, and its symbols, all requirements and supplies were completed to rehabilitate the house and convert it into a museum and cultural center.”
It is noteworthy that the scholar Al-Waili lived in this house in 1960, when he first moved to Baghdad, until he went into exile in 1979. It was confiscated by the dictatorial regime in 1981, and his son, the martyr Muhammad Hussein, was executed.
