    Baghdad Today - Erbil
Environmental expert Burhan Kamal al-Din confirmed today, Saturday (July 6, 2024), that the drought situation in the region has reached dangerous stages, while he pointed out that the water crisis begins in the summer and intensifies in mid-July.
Kamal al-Din said in an interview with Baghdad Today, "With the significant rise in temperatures, there is a large and excessive use of groundwater in the region."
He added, "The use of groundwater and well water will have major impacts and increase drought rates, especially with the rise in temperatures and the water crisis intensifying during the month of August."
He pointed out that "hundreds of acres in Karmian, Raparin, Dohuk and Halabja are exposed to drought and extinction due to the lack of water supplies, and the Kurdistan Regional Government's plan and its handling of this crisis is very weak."
Kamal El-Din explained that “the water crisis begins in the summer and intensifies in mid-July until the beginning of September, and the citizen depends on buying water from tankers or relying on well water, and all of this causes enormous pressure on groundwater and increases drought rates.”
Erbil city faces a severe crisis in providing the required quantities of water during the summer months, as a result of the limited capacity of water production projects that depend on river water and the failure of projects that depend on groundwater due to drought, as the city depends 75% on groundwater wells to secure its needs, and this water is rapidly decreasing.
Local officials say surface and groundwater levels are rapidly declining, with 300 wells running dry last year and a main pipe in a project that would have provided 40% of the city’s water needs by the summer of 2022 breaking three times, disrupting water supplies.
The problem of scarcity of running water is also repeated in the Karmian areas of Sulaymaniyah, where water is cut off from many of its neighborhoods for weeks, while other neighborhoods are supplied with three hours of water every few days, which sparks continuous protests by residents amid demands for radical solutions through the completion of projects that secure the needs of the residents and overcome the problem of drought.
Iraq, like the entire Middle East, has been affected by global climate change. In 2020 and 2021, the country witnessed an unprecedented drought in decades, with rainfall rates declining significantly even in areas that were previously considered to have guaranteed water, in addition to a decline in the amount of water released by Turkey into the Tigris River, while Iran cut off water and changed the course of most of the rivers that originate in Iran and flow into Iraq.
