The Baghdad Municipality has ruled out the establishment of residential complexes at the Rashid Camp site in the Karkh side of Baghdad, noting that procedures are in full swing to launch the Baghdad Forests recreational project, which is ten times larger than Al-Zawraa Park.
The Secretariat had announced the start of its procedures and designs for the giant project, stressing that it would be a breakthrough in improving the environmental reality of the capital, in addition to being a giant natural project.
The Director of Relations and Media at the Secretariat, Mohammed Al-Rubaie, said in an interview with Al-Sabah: “The Prime Minister directed that no residential complexes be established at the Rashid Camp site, as the old proposals and old steps that spoke of establishing residential complexes at the camp site have become imaginary and the site will be allocated for green spaces only.”
Al-Rubaie added that "the Rashid camp, with an area of 5,000 dunams, will be used as a green recreational area that will help Al-Zawraa Park, which has an area of 500 dunams, and thus Baghdad's forests will be 10 times the area of Al-Zawraa Park," indicating that "these areas will be between the Karrada and Al-Zafaraniya areas and will be among the most beautiful areas of the capital." He pointed out that "the project will require an investment union of three Azerbaijani, Turkish and Iraqi companies to complete, after completing the designs and receiving the land, and work is underway in stages, as waste and encroachment have begun, while work will be completed during the remaining years of 2024 and 2025 with the opening of the first parts of Baghdad's forests."
For his part, the spokesman for the Ministry of Electricity, Ahmed Al-Abadi, told Al-Sabah: “His ministry is a member of the committee formed for the Baghdad Forests Project, as it will follow up on the project’s work by establishing the infrastructure related to the electricity sector.”
He explained that "Electricity is preparing to establish the infrastructure for the Baghdad Forests Project, after receiving the plans for establishing transmission lines and transformer stations, and establishing a special station on the site of the South Baghdad Thermal Station, adjacent to Al-Rashid Camp specifically, which is an old station whose useful life has ended."
Al-Abadi pointed out that a plan was designed to "establish a new station by exploiting the site with a greater production capacity, expanding and reconstructing the Dora station near the site, in addition to expanding and establishing the combined cycle of the South Baghdad Gas Station."
