Calls for adopting a national strategy to build an integrated electrical system

The government has intensified its measures aimed at confronting the electricity crisis, which represents the most prominent challenge at the present time according to many specialists, as the competent authorities have begun to take several steps to confront this crisis that Iraq has been suffering from for years, and while the Ministry of Electricity seeks to implement a package of parallel measures to resolve this crisis, which includes improving the infrastructure of the electricity sector and electrical interconnection and securing gas shipments through import and exploitation of associated gas in addition to expanding renewable energy projects, economists have identified a number of reasons that have contributed to the exacerbation of the electricity crisis during the past periods, including corruption, mismanagement and planning, and the deterioration of infrastructure.
Economic expert Dr. Ikram Abdel Aziz explained to Al-Sabah that the country has been suffering from fluctuations and continuous power outages for decades, and the lack of this service in many areas. This has directly affected the movement of Iraqi society and the economy, noting that among the reasons that led to the exacerbation of the electricity problem is the failure to establish a new national network and the absence of investment in the electricity sector, which is the lifeblood of the economy and society. She called for the general budgets to adopt large allocations to support the electricity sector.
Abdelaziz explained that what we are witnessing now requires a pause and a review of the ministry’s plans, as this sector affects people’s lives and impacts many productive sectors that have been severely affected by the decline in supply periods. She indicated that despite the government’s move to solve the electricity problem within five parallel lines, including operating power stations with associated gas, electrical connection, and expanding renewable energy projects, especially solar energy, the problem still exists. At the same time, she praised the major moves made by the ministry, especially the change of some officials due to their failure to solve the problems, stressing that this step has strengthened the citizen’s confidence in the ministry’s oversight performance.
For his part, Dr. Adnan Bahiya, an economic expert, told Al-Sabah that the electricity sector has been exposed to previous accumulations of corruption, mismanagement, poor planning, and dilapidated infrastructure, despite the government’s measures, represented by the Ministry of Electricity, in taking many steps aimed at improving the electricity situation. He expressed his surprise at the lack of a five- or ten-year national strategic plan to build an integrated electricity system that takes into account population density and urban expansion and is capable of meeting all the country’s needs. At the same time, he called for the allocation of sufficient sums of money to meet the needs of the Ministry of Electricity and for it to have a financial allocation that is equivalent to finding solutions. He pointed out that among the solutions that many countries in the world have benefited from to increase electricity production rates and fill the deficit is resorting to the use of solar energy, and not looking at renewable energy as a cosmetic process or to overcome the climate issue, but rather considering it an important tributary in enhancing the country’s capabilities in producing and distributing electricity and filling the existing deficit.
