The leader of the State of Law Coalition, Nouri al-Maliki, appeared today, Thursday, in a televised speech in which he apparently spoke about the early legislative elections in Iraq, while warning at the same time of what he called the process of buying and selling votes, seats and consciences if those elections were held.
Al-Maliki said in his speech, “Elections are the foundation on which the political process is based in all its details, and elections are a right of the people and a duty for them at the same time.”
He added, "The nation is responsible for managing its affairs, and elections are the means and mechanism through which the nation exercises its role and selects those who deserve to be its representatives."
Al-Maliki continued, “Therefore, the elections in their depth must reveal the will of the people because wisdom dictates that through them those who represent the people reach power.” He added, “But if you go into the process of buying and selling seats and what happened in the previous elections, and if the language of money, buying consciences, and the confusing media process prevail, then it will certainly give us inappropriate results.”
In part of his speech, Al-Maliki also touched on the issue of amending the Personal Status Law, saying that it “is not one of the issues in which opinions and whims clash, but rather it is a legal and constitutional issue that is discussed calmly and wisely and should not be in violation of religious obligations. If we make a mistake in it, we will have planted an explosive hotbed within society.”
The amendment to the Personal Status Law sparked widespread controversy within Iraqi society, between those who opposed and supported it, so the Iraqi government decided to discuss all the comments raised about it through the “Supreme Council for Women’s Affairs.”
Opponents say that amending the law allows the marriage of minors and deprives the wife of the rights of alimony and custody, in addition to adopting the religious texts of each sect and denomination in Iraq as a reference for rulings instead of the laws in force.
