Shafaq News/ The Iraqi Polling Team (IPT) announced on Saturday that it had conducted an electronic public opinion poll inside and outside the country on amending the Personal Status Law, in which more than 60,000 people of both sexes participated, most of whom "strongly" rejected the ongoing amendment attempt in parliament.
According to the results of the poll, about 61,648 Iraqi men and women from all over Iraq participated in the referendum.
The survey indicates that (73.2) percent of the survey participants expressed their “strong rejection” of amending Personal Status Law No. 188 issued in 1959. In contrast, (23.8%) of voters expressed their “strong approval” of amending the law. As for the rest of the sample, i.e. (3.1%) of voters, they expressed their lack of interest.
The electronic questionnaire opened at 10:00 a.m. on August 13, 2024 and closed at 11:00 a.m. on the 15th of this month.
81.6% of voters expressed their desire for the personal status law to be civil in nature, compared to 18.4% of voters who demanded that the law be religious and sectarian in nature.
Regarding the place where the voter participated, the percentage of voters from outside Iraq was (9.5%), while those from inside Iraq voted (85.4%). The capital, Baghdad, topped the percentage, and Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan Region, came at the bottom of the vote among the Iraqi governorates.
The highest percentage of voters was between the ages of (46-60), reaching (29.2%), while the lowest percentage was among those between the ages of (18 to 25), reaching (8.3%).
The percentage of married voters was (72.8%), while the percentage of unmarried voters was (12.7%).
Meanwhile, the survey supervisor, Saadoun Mohsen Damd, stated that “this survey is the first in relation to its subject.”
He added that "the survey expressed the extent of the interest of Iraqi men and women in the issue of amending the Personal Status Law, as about 60 thousand voters of both sexes participated in it, which confirms that Iraqi public opinion is an eloquent, interested and active opinion."
The amendment to the Personal Status Law sparked widespread controversy within Iraqi society, between those who opposed and supported it, so the Iraqi government decided to discuss all the comments raised about it through the “Supreme Council for Women’s Affairs.”
Opponents say that amending the law allows the marriage of minors and deprives the wife of the rights of alimony and custody, in addition to adopting the religious texts of each sect and denomination in Iraq as a reference for rulings instead of the laws in force.
