The Ministry of Health announced the approval of the "Protection from Tobacco Harm" law in the coming weeks, indicating that the law prohibits the sale of tobacco products to those under 18 years of age.
Assistant Director General of the Tobacco Control Program, Wassim Kilan, said in a press statement that "the Ministry of Health, as a member of the World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, and within the international system, has begun to take steps consistent with the policy emanating from this agreement in working as a strategy to combat smoking in cooperation with all ministries concerned with this issue, by imposing taxes, controlling border crossings, promoting the harms of these products, health warnings, and conducting surveys to identify indicators of product use in Iraqi society."
He stressed that "the Ministry of Health, in cooperation with the Health and Environment Committee in the House of Representatives, has reached the final touches of the Tobacco Harm Protection Law, which is an update to the Tobacco Control Law No. 19 of 2021," noting that "one of the provisions of the law stipulates the prohibition of the promotion and use of these products by age groups under 18 years of age."
