    Economy News - Follow-up
Two German and Irish organizations specializing in hunger and poverty indicators showed that Iraq ranked 64th in the Global Hunger Index during the year 2023.
A table prepared by the German organization "Welthungerhilfe" and the Irish "Worldwide Concern", which was reviewed by "Al-Eqtisad News", showed that Iraq ranked 64th with 13.8 points out of 125 countries included in the table, down two places from 2022 and thus falling into the category of moderate hunger.
She added, "The hunger index in Iraq decreased after reaching 23.6 points in 2000, then decreased in 2008 to 20.3 points, then decreased in 2015 to 16.5 points, and to 13.8 points in 2023."
The index divided hunger into five categories that show the extent of countries' suffering. The first category came in green from zero to 9.9 points, which are countries that do not suffer from hunger and are called "low". The second category came in between 10 and 19.9 points, which is "moderate". The third category came in between 20 points and 34.9 points, which is "serious". The fourth category came in between 35 points and 49.9 points, which warns of "danger", and the fifth category came in between 50 points and above, which is called "very worrying".
In the Arab world, Kuwait, followed by the Emirates, Tunisia, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Morocco and Oman, respectively, were in the low category of hunger indicators, followed by Lebanon, Egypt and Iraq, respectively, in the medium or moderate category, followed by Jordan in the serious category, Syria in the dangerous category, and Sudan, Yemen and Somalia in the very worrying category.
Globally, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Chile, China, Croatia, Estonia and Georgia ranked first in the list of countries with the lowest global hunger index, while South Sudan, Burundi and Somalia ranked last in the world with the highest global hunger index.
