Industry to {Sabah}: Contracts to supply state ministries with food products

As part of the government's efforts to support local products, the Ministry of Industry and Minerals is moving towards concluding contracts with several government agencies to supply them with various local food products.
The Director of the General Company for Food Products at the Ministry, Haidar Shuwai’ Muzal, told Al-Sabah: “While the company is working to increase its production capacity and supply local markets with locally-made food products, it is simultaneously moving towards concluding contracts with government sectors to supply them with food supplies, such as the Ministries of Health and Interior, in addition to National Security, along with other government agencies.” He added that these agencies have submitted their offers to factories affiliated with the Ministry’s companies, similar to supplying them with dairy products from the Abu Ghraib plant, which has been closed since 2003.
He explained that concluding these contracts will enhance the local product, which has specifications that are not available in its imported counterpart, including being subject to tests by the Central Agency for Standardization and Quality Control before starting the production stages and until they are completed. The tests are also laboratory and biological, and in the event of a violation, the product is completely destroyed. In addition, the imported product contains preservatives that pose a risk to human health, in addition to the subsidized local prices, in addition to not draining hard currency in import operations.
Muzel noted that if the demand for local products increases, there will be an increase in production, and thus the need for workers will increase in order to increase the production capacities of any of the company’s factories, stressing his company’s keenness to achieve food security by providing the local product and selling it to citizens at subsidized prices, in addition to the quality of the product, which has become competitive with imported ones, recalling that the Abu Ghraib factory had obtained the (Australian ISO) certificate in 2015 for the quality of its products globally.
