WASHINGTON (Reuters) - US authorities plan to prevent passengers on certain foreign flights destined for the United States from carrying large electronic devices inside the plane, US officials said on Monday, in response to an unspecified terrorist threat.
The Department of Homeland Security is expected to announce the new procedure on Tuesday, officials said, adding that it had been under investigation since the US government learned of a threat several weeks ago.
A source said the measure would involve about 8 to 10 foreign airlines. A separate government official confirmed a report by the Associated Press that the ban would affect 10 airports in eight countries in the Middle East and North Africa.
Officials said US airlines were not included in the ban, which would be applied to larger mobile phones, without saying why. Passengers will be allowed to carry larger devices, such as tablet PCs, laptops, portable DVD players and cameras, into their luggage after they have been checked.
The CNN quoted an unnamed US official as saying that the ban on electronics on certain airlines is linked to al Qaeda, and that some of the information came from a raid by US special forces in Yemen recently. The CNN report could not be immediately confirmed, but Reuters reported that the group had planned several failed bombing attempts on aircraft destined for Western countries.
Emirates and Etihad Airways said on Tuesday they had not been notified of any new restrictions on carrying electronic devices on board flights to the United States.
"At the moment, we have not received any notification of changes in baggage restrictions (on board passengers) on board flights to the United States," a spokeswoman for Emirates Airline said in an e-mail statement.
A spokesman for Etihad Airways said the Abu Dhabi-based company had received no new guidance.
Emirates is the largest airline in the Middle East to operate flights to the United States, with daily flights to 12 destinations, while the airline sends daily flights to six US cities.
Turkish Airlines also said it was one of the airlines covered by a US ban on carrying passengers more electronic devices than mobile phones on flights to the United States.
"The relevant authorities have decided that large electronic devices should not be allowed in mobile phones or smart phones inside the aircraft," the company said in a statement, adding that medical devices were excluded.
Reuters said earlier that the ban would include airlines based in Jordan and Saudi Arabia, where Royal Jordanian and Saudi Arabian Airlines are flying to the United States.
The Saudi Civil Aviation Authority has informed airlines flying from Saudi airports to US airports of the latest procedures from the US security authorities, which are obliged to passengers to charge laptops and tablets such as the iPad with accompanying luggage, the Riyadh newspaper reported on its website. "
An official with the Civil Aviation Authority told the newspaper "to inform these instructions from the top US authorities of the Saudi interior."
The Saudi Airlines in tweeted that the US transport authorities had prevented the carrying of large electronic devices in the bags carried by passengers with them inside the plane.
In turn, official sources at EgyptAir said that a decision will be implemented to prevent passengers from taking laptop and laptop computers within 96 hours.
The sources said that the company received notification from the Civil Aviation Authority of America to prevent passengers carrying computers and tablets with passengers on flights to New York, noting that these devices will be placed in the luggage of passengers and not inside the aircraft.
Meanwhile, the White House refused to comment. Homeland Security spokesman David Lapan said the ministry had no comment on potential security precautions but would provide timely updates.
