Washington confirms its commitment to uphold the principles of press freedom in Iraq
BAGHDAD - The US embassy in Iraq said on Wednesday that its government was committed to supporting the basic principles of a free and independent press around the world, including Iraq.
On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, the embassy offered its condolences to Iraqi journalists and said it was a tribute to journalists who lost their lives while they were working.
"Freedom of speech and expression is the cornerstone of democratic values. Journalists and bloggers keep citizens informed and maintain the government's credibility and often reveal embarrassing facts. "World Press Freedom Day provides an opportunity for all countries to denounce censorship of the media, respect and support freedom of expression, call for the protection of journalists and call for acceptance of the other opinion."
"She is aware of the dangers journalists face around the world. Many brave journalists have been killed or injured in the course of their duties, and journalists must be protected and allowed to perform their duties without harassment or intimidation. "
