The White House said on Sunday that President Donald Trump's statements condemning the violence in a march of white nationalists also included the Ku Klux Klan and neo-Nazis, a day after he was criticized for not openly condemning white racists.
On Saturday, Trump condemned "the terrible review of hatred, intolerance and violence (by many parties)".
But the White House said that "the president said strongly in his statement that he condemns all forms of violence, fanaticism and hatred, and of course includes white extremists, Ku Klux Klan, neo-Nazis and all extremist groups.
US authorities opened an investigation into the violence that erupted at a gathering of white nationalists in Virginia and put pressure on the Trump administration to take a firm stand against extremists who are part of the Republican Party's political base.
A 32-year-old woman died and 19 others were injured on Saturday when a man ran into a group of people protesting against a march of white nationalists in Charlottesville. Fifteen others were injured in bloody clashes between white nationalists and anti-nationalist demonstrators.
James Fields, a former US Army recruits, is due to appear before the court on charges of murder and other charges of felony.
Democrats and Republicans criticized Trump for failing to openly condemn the white militants who sparked the clashes and for having waited too long to tackle the violence, the first major domestic crisis facing him as president.
