     Baghdad / Range

Basra's provincial council on Sunday elected a new governor more than two weeks after the former governor Majed al-Nasrawi fled on charges of corruption.
The provincial council unanimously elected Eng. As'ad al-Eidani as the governor. The governor of Basra received 24 votes out of a total of 27 members attended the voting session held in the absence of the President of the Council Sabah al-Bezouni, currently suspended on charges of corruption.
The other two candidates, Riyad al-Eidani and Karim al-Shawak, received one vote each and one empty paper.
A document, leaked last week, revealed the existence of 38 candidates for the post of governor of Basra, replacing Nasrawi, including Asaad al-Eidani.
Al-Eidani belongs to the National Congress. He holds a senior position in his ranks and was a candidate for the House of Representatives for the State of Law bloc during the 2014 elections.
With the background of the political Eidani, but the stream of wisdom to stand behind his candidacy as an independent figure, especially with the Party of the wise to the post after the escape of the former governor.
The Eid al-Adhani election undermined calls for the choice of a future governor and technocrats. The leader of the Sadrist movement, Moqtada al-Sadr, called after the escape of Majid Nasrawi, to take the post of governor of Basra, "a figure of technocrats away from quotas and parties."
"After 14 years of suffering, Basra today is in dire need of an independent technocrat away from quotas and partying," Sadr said in a tweet on Twitter.
Hundreds of demonstrations have also been held in the province of Basra over the past few days, demanding the selection of a new governor of Basra from technocrats, independents and residents of the province exclusively.
"The provincial council of Basra voted to choose Asaad Abdul Amir al-Eidani, governor of Basra instead of resigned Majid al-Nasraoui," said a brief statement issued by the Basra provincial bureau.
After the election of Eidani, the National Congress blessed this choice. "We welcome the election of the Basrah Governorate Council to Mr. As'ad Abdul-Amir Al-Eidani as a new governor. Basra is heading towards a new era and a clear vision. We hope that it will be the foundation of development and construction," he said in a statement.
The National Conference that "the parking of political blocs and representatives of the people of the province of Basra with the new governor in this mission, will be sufficient enough to make the success of the experiment, and the completion of many of the steps that are expected by the people of the province of Basra long ago, in order to improve the level of service and living for citizens of Basra after neglecting previous years" .
