The Guardian published a report prepared by Jason Burke, the newspaper's correspondent in Africa, about hundreds of Africans who joined jihadist organizations who told researchers that their government's counterterrorism measures encouraged them to join them.

The findings were published in a United Nations study published yesterday, which is expected to raise much controversy, the paper said.

Authorities in Africa are battling organizations such as the Boko Haram group in West Africa and al Shabaab in the east of the continent, as well as the Daqsh and al-Qaeda organizations, sometimes supported by the United States and Western countries.

In Africa alone, nearly 33,000 people have been killed in the last six years. Of the 500 "former jihadists", 71 percent said state actions, such as killing a family member or friend or arresting a relative or friend, forced them to join jihadist groups.

Kenyan authorities are reported to be responsible for a large number of killings of persons suspected of terrorism, while Amnesty International accuses the Nigerian army and police of systematic human rights violations.

But the authors of the study cautioned that government behavior was partly motivated by joining extremist organizations and could not explain why individuals were attracted to extremist ideologies.

It was noted that most of those who joined the extremist organizations came from marginalized areas, and some were frustrated by the economic situation and the difficulty of finding jobs.

Most believe that governments protect the interests of a few privileged people.

Other factors include low education, lack of father during childhood, and lack of information about Islam.

The study highlighted the differences between Africa and other parts of the Middle East in terms of individuals' motivation to join extremist organizations.
