British-Chinese understandings beyond BRICEST

Britain is considering its options for the post-BRICEST period and is negotiating a free trade agreement with the United States as soon as it leaves the European Union, International Trade Minister Liam Fox said last week. British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt said he welcomed China's offer to hold talks on a post-BRICST trade deal during his visit to Beijing in an effort to strengthen relations before his country leaves the European Union next year. Hunt, who was appointed foreign minister earlier this month, will visit the Chinese capital for talks with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi and other senior officials on a two-stop tour in Paris and Vienna, where he will hold talks with his European counterparts on BRICEST. "We discussed the offer by Foreign Minister Wang to start talks on a possible free trade agreement between Britain and China," said Hunt at a joint press conference. "We welcome this and we said we will study it." Reports last week showed Prime Minister Teresa Mae sent ministers to the 27 EU member states in an effort to broker behind-the-scenes agreements after EU chief negotiator Michel Barnier expressed reservations about her plan for BRICEST. An agreement on how to leave Britain, set for March 29, 2019, must be reached within at least three months before a European summit in mid-October.
