A UAE official said the United Arab Emirates and other Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries had begun talks with Iraq to connect its electricity network.

"The GCC Electricity Interconnection Authority is studying with the Iraqi authorities an electrical connection in Basra province in southern Iraq," Matar al-Nayadi, the Undersecretary of the UAE Ministry of Energy and Industry, told Reuters.

Iraq and its southern province of Basra have been suffering from power cuts for years as public services deteriorated.
