Reuters) - US President Donald Trump has told him US intelligence has told him that China is moving its troops to the borders of the vast autonomous city of Hong Kong against the backdrop of unrest in the city.
"Our intelligence has told us that the Chinese government is moving troops toward the Hong Kong border. Everyone should be calm and safe," Trump wrote in a tweet on Twitter on Tuesday.
Trump has previously described the situation in Hong Kong as "difficult" and expressed hope that things would end "in the interests of freedom and for the benefit of all, including China" and peacefully.
China called on the United States not to interfere in its internal affairs, referring to comments by some members of the US Congress who condemned what they called "police violence" against the demonstrators.
The clashes continued in Hong Kong, where police and protesters clashed Tuesday near the international airport, where flights were suspended for the second time in two days.
Hong Kong has been protesting for nearly two months against a law on extradition for trial in Chinese courts outside the city.
