BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Outgoing
MP Raed Fahmy on Monday criticized the government's actions on protesters' demands, calling on them to resign.
Fahmi said his resignation "came in opposition to the Iraqi authorities and security forces dealing with the movement of protests and youth uprising since the beginning of this month, especially in terms of the use of all forms of violence and escalating, which led to a large number of deaths and injuries."
"It is not a solution but a form of pressure on the government on the one hand," he said.
He added that "the means of repression and violence practiced against the demonstrators proved infertile in front of the demonstrations, but the government and security authorities continue to suppress and kill demonstrators."
"It is true that some demonstrators resort to non-peaceful means and violate public property, but the general nature of the protest is peaceful," he said.
He continued, "The majority of the protesters are young people who are armed only with their naked breasts, but the government did not take any significant political step through which to end the congestion, but resorted to fuzzy measures, including economic promises and other measures that have not received the acceptance of people and conviction." "The promises are unreal and have already been given to them at a bygone stage."
