A European official identifies the sites of the effects stolen by ISIS from Iraq and Syria and is expected to sell them

The European Union's counter-terrorism coordinator, Gilles de Kirchhoff, said in Paris he was convinced that a large number of artifacts stolen during the Islamic State's takeover of large parts of Syria and Iraq remained hidden in the region pending sale later.
"I am convinced that much of the stolen remains in the vicinity of Syria and Iraq, pending a dwindling interest in placing these pieces on the market at Christie's or Sotheby's within six to seven years," de Kirchhoff told a news conference on terrorist threats.
"As part of its propaganda campaigns, ISIS was destroying archaeological sites, but in fact selling licenses for archaeological excavations and looting," he said. But he pointed out that this type of funding was "marginal" to the organization.
De Kirchhoff, who says he has studied this issue in depth, said countering the smuggling of antiquities is a difficult task because "many of those who buy these pieces don't realize that they finance terrorism."
He says that the person who buys antiquities "has the impression that he is serving mankind by protecting a wonderful piece of destruction by the barbarians. The buyer himself says it is better to have it in my collection."
"It is a vicious circle: with a few cases that have reached their conclusions in the judiciary, not many resources are being put into the police, so we don't see many cases," de Kirchhoff said.
