OPEC Secretary General Muhammad Barkindo said that Washington’s approval of the anti-organization NOPEC bill might threaten US interests abroad and endanger Americans and American assets.
Mohamed Barkando urged the member states of the organization to engage in contacts with the American administration.
He said, "It is necessary for member states to enhance bilateral diplomatic contacts with government officials in the United States ... and to explain the shortcomings of the bill with regard to the United States, if passed."
He continued, "These deficiencies may include weakening the principle of immunity at the global level, endangering American interests abroad, as well as protecting their citizens and their assets."
He added that some members may face fines if the anti-organization law is passed in the US Congress and signed by the president.
He emphasized that the members of the organization may face the confiscation of assets on US soil or placing them under the custody of third parties.
