{Local: Al Furat News} An official in the Kurdistan region warned against desertification in the southern regions of the region due to drought and lack of rain.
The useful summary.. In important news, you can find it in the Euphrates News channel on the telegram.. [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
The media official of the Directorate of Meteorology and Seismic Monitoring in the region, Azzi Jetto, said in a press statement that "the climate of Kurdistan has changed, and the solution to the problem of desertification lies in the establishment of irrigation projects and the green belt, but if things go as they are, desertification may invade the south of the Kurdistan region."
Jettou described desertification as "expected," noting that "the rise in temperatures and the scarcity of rain may increase this serious risk, but in the event that surface water is not wasted and this water is used for agriculture and irrigation, the danger will clear."
It is noteworthy that the Kurdistan Region is divided according to the percentage of rainfall into three regions: scarce rain, medium rain, and heavy rain.
It is noteworthy that the Federal Ministry of Agriculture revealed on May 31 that more than 50% of the country's area is plagued by desertification, while indicating that Baghdad has become unsuitable for housing, especially on the Rusafa side, due to the decline in green spaces.
It is noteworthy that the President of the Republic, Barham Salih, stressed in his speech on June 5, the need to “confront climate change must be a national priority in the country, as it is the most serious future threat to its economic effects and significant environmental damage,” noting that “54% of the land Iraq is subject to agricultural loss, and desertification affects (39%) of the country’s area, and the dams built on the Tigris and Euphrates threaten an increasing shortage of irrigated water and endanger our agricultural production and even drinking water, and the country may face a deficit of up to 10.8 billion cubic meters of water annually by year 2035".
He added that "seven million Iraqis have already been affected by drought and forced displacement, and data indicate that the country's population will double from (38) million today to (80) million by the year (2050), due to the highest rates of population growth in Iraq, and this doubles the economic and social risks. climate change if left unaddressed.
