An official source said, on Wednesday, that the elections will take place as scheduled, stressing that Al-Sadr has received pledges from political forces, with the exception of two parties who refused to do so.
The source said in an interview with NRT Arabia (August 25, 2021), that "the upcoming meeting in Baghdad aims to defuse the crisis and persuade the Sadrist movement to stop participating in the upcoming elections."
He added that "there is a reform paper presented by the political blocs participating in the political process of the Sadrist movement, which is about guarantees for Muqtada Sadr."
He pointed out that "the paper includes uncontrolled disarmament, combating corruption, expelling foreign forces and supporting the Sadrist movement in the event that it obtains the position of prime minister."
The source confirmed that "the reform paper was approved by the Kurdish blocs and all other political blocs, except for the State of Law bloc headed by al-Maliki and the Sadiqoon bloc led by al-Khazali."
He pointed out that "the elections have been decided and will take place on their scheduled date on the tenth of next October," explaining that "the meeting will be held without the participation of the Sadrist movement."
