Divorce cases are escalating in Iraq.. Early marriage is the main reason

Baghdad / Hussein Hatem
In the latest monthly statistics on divorce cases, published by the Supreme Judicial Council, the number of divorces during the month of January reached 6,486 cases in the Iraqi governorates, except for the Kurdistan region, where Baghdad governorate topped the divorce cases with 2,390 cases.
The statistic comes from 16 presidencies of the Court of Appeal, one for each governorate, and two in Baghdad, in Rusafa and Karkh.
As for the cases of marriage, it reached 26000, and Baghdad governorate ranked first in terms of marriage cases, with 6,329 marriages.
This high percentage raised concern about the escalation of the phenomenon of divorce in society, and its negative impact on its security and stability.
The rise in the number of divorce cases, according to specialists, reflects the widening circle of family disintegration, and the resulting severe and reproductive social problems and crises.
Shaima Abdel Aziz, a professor of psychology at the University of Baghdad, said in an interview with Al-Mada that "divorce cases are heading towards a continuous escalation in Iraq," adding, "In comparison with neighboring countries, divorce in Iraq has become a phenomenon."
Abdel Aziz believes that "one of the reasons that exacerbated these cases is the early marriage of girls and the desire of parents to marry their daughters only without thinking about the consequences that will happen after marriage."
And the psychology professor added, "The real statistics of divorce cases exceed the officially registered, as many cases are in homes, such as emotional divorce and psychological divorce, and they are not registered in the courts." Among the reasons for divorce also, Abdel Aziz points out that “the economic situation plays a major role in the stability of families and the continuation of life in a normal way,” pointing out that “most young people suffer from unemployment or their work is with daily wages that are limited to facilitating their daily affairs only without future guarantees, and this in turn is in turn It greatly affects the income of the individual and the family in general.”
The psychology professor adds that “one of the reasons that increased divorce cases is also the negative use of technology and entry into cultures and morals that have nothing to do with our society,” noting that “our society is governed by clans and moral values may be alienated in other societies.” “The husband’s preoccupation with technology matters, spending a long time on social networking sites, and his neglect of the family, is one of the factors that increase the phenomenon of divorce cases as well,” according to Abdel Aziz, noting that “preserving society begins with the family, as the nucleus of society is the family and its disintegration means the disintegration of society.”
And he pointed out, "The majority of divorced people are young people, for the same reasons we mentioned, in addition to the interference of the husband and wife's families into the lives of the spouses, and domestic violence."
In turn, Mustafa Zaidan, a lawyer in one of the Baghdad courts, says that “most of the divorce cases that come to the courts are because of shared housing with the husband’s family and the overcrowding of the house with families,” noting that “married couples are subjected to severe pressure during the period of preparation for marriage, economic and social pressures that will cast a shadow.” Later on, the already fragile marriage.”
Zaidan added to (Al-Mada), that "the other factor causing divorce is technology and the misuse of mobile phones and social media, which in turn ends with betrayal or blackmail that leads to a dead end that will be separated by divorce."
The lawyer believes, “Most of the marriages that took place after 2003 lack a future vision and responsibility on both sides, in addition to the fact that they take place without income or a stable source of work.”
Zaidan explains that "the escalation of divorce cases is paid primarily by children, and the parents of both spouses bear the responsibility."
For his part, the legal affairs specialist divides divorce cases into (general cases) and (special cases).
Al-Tamimi said in an interview with (Al-Mada), that “the general cases are the ones that are almost similar in cases of divorce and judicial differentiation in the cases heard before the Sharia courts, and they are represented by the security, economic, social, public and cultural situation, and the recentness of one or both spouses.”
As for the special cases, the legal affairs specialist points out that they are “cases that are diverse and not the same, and they are much less than the general divorce cases.”
Al-Tamimi adds, “Special cases are represented by the lack of educational and cultural equivalence, and this is when there is a discord in the testimony between them and also cultural awareness, so you find arrogance from one of them over the other, which makes the continuation of married life between them almost impossible, and the continuation of married life between them is just hell and constant torture for one or both of them.” “.
And he added, “Among the special cases is also the lack of economic parity, as if the spouses are employees with a difference in their salaries and job positions, especially the wife’s superiority over the husband in the career ladder and the salary she receives is more than the husband’s, in addition to the lack of social parity.”
Al-Tamimi points out that “there are cases related to morality, lack of chastity and deviation, as if the spouses or one of them commits marital infidelity and is not morally committed,” referring to “cases related to the personality of married couples or one of them, such as weak personality and parental control or one of them over the spouses or one of them, in addition to cases related to health On both sides, it is related to childbearing.”
