Erbil (Kurdistan 24) - Two Iraqi officials, in connection with the ongoing investigations into the Iranian ballistic bombing of Erbil last month, said that the authorities concerned with the "espionage" file had not found "a single evidence" to support Iran's allegations of the presence of an Israeli "Mossad" headquarters in the city. According to Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper.
The newspaper quoted officials, on condition of anonymity, that Iran informed the Baghdad and Erbil governments, earlier, of its annoyance about the presence of the Iranian opposition in the Kurdistan Region, and did not talk about the "Mossad" until after the bombing of the home of Kurdish businessman Baz Karim Al-Barzanji.
On March 13, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard claimed targeting what it said was an "Israeli strategic center" in the Kurdistan Region with 12 ballistic missiles, in an operation that it said came in response to the killing of two of its officers by Israeli shelling near Damascus.
One of the Iraqi officials said that "Baghdad asked the Iranian side to reinforce its allegations about the Israeli (Mossad) with coherent evidence that can be pursued, but it did not do so despite repeated Iraqi attempts, and despite the preoccupation of information agencies with a large-scale investigation in search of evidence."
The other official, an independent Iraqi deputy who participated in the hearings on the investigation file, confirmed that "what was mentioned about the (former) Iranian ambassador, Iraj Masjedi, was not enough to verify the existence of a (Mossad) headquarters, and Baghdad did not share any useful information except for existing accusations. to speculate.”
The deputy believes that Tehran's shift from "the Iranian opposition in Erbil to the accusation of harboring a public headquarters for the (Mossad) leads Iraqis to suspect that the ballistic bombing is part of Iran's confusion over the results of last October's elections, and their consequences."
According to the newspaper, this conclusion is consistent with the common interpretations in the Kurdish political community, which does not isolate the bombing from the political pressure that Erbil is facing, since the "Kurdistan Democratic Party" entered into an alliance with the leader of the Sadrist movement, Muqtada al-Sadr. However, the two officials confirmed that the investigations they reviewed were not based on partisan interpretations, and that the interrogation and tracking operations were based on the pursuit of information, individuals, and places. Nevertheless, the hypothesis of the Mossad headquarters remained: “Female and weak.”
The two officials conveyed a sensitive atmosphere from the Iraqi investigations about the bombing, including the confusion of investigators in the information agencies about choosing the house of a businessman that the investigations proved was not related to illegal activities. One of the officials said, "Baz Karim was cooperative, but he is still amazed at what is happening."
The two officials confirmed that a technical team of investigators conducted an in-depth survey of the targeted house, and did not find any leads that could support the Iranian accusation. According to one of the officials, the rubble of the house was "indicating an unsuspecting civilian building."
Reuters had quoted Iraqi and Turkish officials at the end of last March, saying that the Iranian ballistic bombing that targeted Erbil aimed to destroy “a nascent plan to export gas from the Kurdistan region to Turkey and Europe with Israeli participation.”
The Iraqi official added: “A senior Iranian security official informed that The attack was a multi-purpose message to many people and groups. It is up to them how to interpret it. Whatever Israel plans, from the energy sector to agriculture, it will not come true."
The office of the President of the Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani, denied holding any meetings with US and Israeli officials to discuss a pipeline in Villa Al-Barzanji. The Kurds deny any Israeli military or official presence on their lands.
The Iraqi investigators reviewed with civilian officials "the origin of Iran's communication about its opposition in Erbil", and discovered that the authorities at the center sent officials to Tehran for "more cooperation", as they did the same with the security authorities in the Kurdistan Region, which responded to cooperation in this file.
According to the officials, the investigations reviewed the Iranian opposition's file with high-ranking officials in the Iraqi diplomacy, and concluded that what Baghdad had obtained from Iranian information was only "suspicious and exaggerated."
Asharq Al-Awsat interrupted the two officials' information with members of parliamentary committees in connection with the hearings that took place last month, and it was found that the actors in the Iraqi investigations "were frustrated with the Iranian way of formulating dangerous allegations, during a highly sensitive local and regional circumstance."
According to what the two officials learned, the Iranians claimed the presence of more than three "military divisions" of the opposition in the Kurdistan Region near the border with Iran, and that this assured the Iraqis that Tehran "is drowning in the exaggeration that may be intended."
As a result of this package of information received within a month of the investigation, the investigators felt that they were dealing with a political file, based on a "narrative without facts." However, deepening the investigation, led the information agencies in Iraq to review the Israeli activity in Iraq, and whether there were spying operations carried out by Tel Aviv during the past years.
According to the officials, the investigations, which ruled out the existence of a fixed headquarters, as the Iranians claim, also pointed to espionage attempts carried out by individuals with European nationalities under the cover of security companies.
According to what the two officials learned, investigations indicated such cases in the cities of central and southern Iraq, as well as Mosul, and that the authorities dealt with this by arresting those involved, and referring a number of them to the judiciary.
The two officials conclude that the authorities in Iraq "have been busy for weeks tracking dangerous and sensitive speculation that motivated the bombing of Erbil with ballistic missiles, but the absence and absence of evidence puts the Iraqi authorities in front of a different type of Iranian signals that may associate unprecedented bombing with a fabricated hypothesis."
