For years, the water crisis in Mesopotamia has turned orchards and farms into [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] due to [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] cutting off some of the important tributaries that feed the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. Turkey has built dams, while Iran has cut off water from some rivers that flow into [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] . The Minister of Water Resources, Mahdi Al-Hamdani, confirmed that Iran is diverting rivers within its borders, considering that it is working to displace communities inside Iraq.
Al-Hamdani said, in press statements, that "Iran is changing the course of the rivers, and this in itself is a clear international violation."
He added that "whatever the agreement is, it does not give it the right to change the course of the rivers," noting that "we do not see cooperation from the Iranian side so far."
Al-Hamdani stressed that "the Iranian situation is ambiguous for us, and we need in the coming days to sit together, it is illogical for the neighbor Iran to divert the rivers," noting that "Iran loses Iraq's right to water, and we hope that the neighbor Iran will respond to hold negotiations to resolve this crisis." .
Regulating the water profile
In turn, Iraqi President Barham Salih called for organizing the water file between Iraq and neighboring countries, based on the principles of good neighborliness and taking into account common interests.
During his meeting with the Minister of Water Resources, Mahdi Rashid, the Iraqi president stressed that the water file should be a top priority, as it is one of the pillars of Iraqi national security.
He stressed the need to protect water bodies, maintain dams, and develop strategic plans involving state institutions, in coordination with international expertise in the field of facing drought, desertification and climate change crises.
Saleh called for the need to address climate change as a national priority in Iraq, and to initiate the initiative to revive Mesopotamia.
Parliamentary pressure
While the First Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hakim Al-Zamili, stressed that the water file needs a real pause, and that there is a waste of water and the failure to use mechanization and modern irrigation methods and dams in the best way.
Al-Zamili told the Iraqi News Agency (INA), that "the Ministry of Water Resources was left to fight alone without the presence of interest and assistance from the responsible authorities," adding that "the water file is governmental, and the Parliament and the government must have a role in addressing it as it affects the lives of citizens."
Al-Zamili revealed that "the House of Representatives is looking to develop permanent solutions, whether it is internal support in the budget or water conservation and deterring the many abuses, especially in the governorates by parties, clans, armed parties and governors, which caused chaos and exploitation of large areas without the approval of the Ministry of Water Resources." .

He pointed out that "some people started digging wells, agricultural investment, and establishing fish ponds, without the Ministry's opinion being a deterrent to persistence."
He pointed out that "there are clans that interfere in irrigation projects and oil fields, and this is a chaos that must be deterred and that there should be a party to be held accountable and not leave it to expand in the provinces, and we need a real pause from the security services and the government in the water file because it is the most dangerous."
He continued, "We have commercial relations with neighboring countries, and we need tools to pressure them, and the government is moving in a real way, and we pledge to play our role in Parliament to pressure these countries regarding the water quota, and the Ministry of Water Resources must do its duty to maintain water levels and store it in the correct scientific manner."
Al-Zamili stressed that "the House of Representatives will support the ministry in the budget, and the government should seriously interfere in putting pressure on neighboring countries to secure Iraq's water quota," revealing that "we spoke with the Turkish ambassador, and we will have a conversation with the Iranian ambassador in Iraq in order to adhere to the prescribed water quotas." ".
scarcity season
Earlier, a spokesman for the Ministry of Water Resources, Ali Radi, said in a press statement, "The last season was scarce," explaining that "the lack of water revenues was due to many factors, most notably the natural aspect of global warming and climatic changes that affected the countries of the world." And Iraq, as an estuary country, ranked as the five most affected countries in the world, in addition to the technical aspect of some upstream countries establishing their own dams to sequester water, in addition to population growth along the river basin, these factors as a whole made the country go through a scarce season.
He added that "the country is going through different water seasons, sometimes it is scarce and at other times it is flood," noting that "the year 2019 was a flood and raised water levels in reservoirs significantly and provided water that enabled us to use it in the two seasons of scarcity, 2020 and 2021, to cover the requirements, which Resulted in reduced storage due to use."
A spokesman for the Ministry of Water Resources indicated that "talks with Turkey and Iran are continuing, and we seek to intensify them in the coming period, and that the focus is on ensuring Iraq's water rights and sharing damages in the scarce seasons."
