The Iraqi Journalists Syndicate and the press family celebrate on the 15th of June of each year the National Day of the Iraqi Press, the anniversary of the publication of the first Iraqi newspaper, "Al-Zawraa" newspaper in 1869.
The union said in a statement, "The celebration of the Iraqi Press Day means reviewing the busy march of Iraqi journalists over those long years, which were characterized by giving and distinction, and the defense of their country, Iraq, its gains and its future through media coverage, as well as in conveying its bright image to the world. Their Syndicate had a distinguished role in Highlighting the civilized face of Iraq at the Arab, regional and international levels through its presence in Arab and international press organizations and bodies. The head of the Iraqi Journalists Syndicate, Muayyad al-Lami, heads the General Union of Arab Journalists, in addition to membership in the Executive Office of the International Federation of Journalists, where he worked through these two sites to show the bright image of Iraq and its civilized role throughout history."
The statement added,
And he continued, "On this dear occasion, the Iraqi Journalists Syndicate salutes the souls of the martyrs of the press who sacrificed themselves for the message of the free word and the honorable pen. It also renews its praise for the active and prominent role of the journalistic family in the overall events that Iraq has witnessed and still is."
The Syndicate concluded its statement by saying, "A salute to the Iraqi journalist family on its glorious feast and a pledge to continue giving and professional creativity for the sake of elevating our country and elevating its status, and may God protect Iraq and its honorable people, and every year and the journalist family is good."
