Iraq is preparing to participate in a Gulf-US summit called for by Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz, in the middle of next July.
The Saudi Royal Court announced a visit by US President Joe Biden to the country, including a Gulf, Jordanian, Egyptian, and Iraqi summit.
The Diwan said in a statement that Biden's visit includes "a joint summit called by the Saudi monarch, which includes the leaders of the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, Jordan's King Abdullah II, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, and Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kazemi."
The statement stated, "Biden will visit Saudi Arabia on July 15-16, at the invitation of King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and in order to strengthen the historical bilateral relations and the distinguished strategic partnership between the Kingdom and the United States."
The Foreign Relations Committee indicates that the Iraqi delegation headed by Al-Kazemi may present, during the summit, a number of security and economic files.
Committee member Muthanna Amin says that "Iraq's foreign relationship must be strong and balanced, to return to its regional and international standing, especially the file of relations with the Gulf states."
Amin adds, "Iraq is linked to countries with economic, social and cultural extensions, with its special distinction, an environmental and social approach," noting that "Iraq's return to its regional position requires regional acceptance, built through solid and strong relations."
The committee member believes that the participation of US President Joe Biden in the summit will be linked to the recent tensions between Washington and Riyadh in light of talk about the possibility of “resetting relations” with the aim of “overcoming the issue of the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi and Saudi support for the Russian military campaign in Ukraine, as well as the oil file represented by decisions OPEC, which created a chasm between the two parties.”
Regarding Baghdad’s participation, Amin says, the Iraqi delegation can present security-economic files, including the demarcation of the maritime borders with Kuwait, the issue of fishermen and Khor Abdullah, and the railway connection.
He explains, that participation "may contribute positively to the development and revitalization of Iraqi-Saudi relations, which will reflect on the investment sector, to attract other Gulf countries."
