Today, Friday, Diyala Governorate announced the start of the construction of the longest bridge in Iraq on Hamrin Lake, northeast of the province, linking it to the Kurdistan Region and the Iranian border.
Director of Diyala Roads and Bridges, Hani Ghazi, said, "A specialized company has started the Hamrin Lake bridge project as an alternative to the road that is prone to drowning and damage due to the likely rise in lake levels during the rainy seasons."
And Ghazi indicated that "the bridge's length is more than (3 km), with a cost of completion of (62) billion dinars, and a completion period of (1100) days, and it will connect the areas of the Hamrin Basin with the Kalar Road leading to the Kurdistan Region on the one hand, and to the Munthiriya border port on the other. “.
Ghazi stressed that "the project is under the supervision of the Directorate of Roads and Bridges and is in regular stages of completion," considering that the bridge is "a major strategic project in Diyala and the longest bridge in Iraq."
The Hamrin Lake Road is an important land corridor between Baquba and Khanaqin, passing through the Muqdadiyah district to the Kurdistan Region, and is the closest to the cities and villages of the Hamrin Basin, which has a population of more than 250 thousand people.
The floods and torrential rains that flowed into Hamrin Lake in 2019, damaged the road, broke it and made it out of service.
