The International Coalition dismissed the commander of a military faction at Al-Tanf base from his post because of his attempt to coordinate with the Iraqi side to open a border crossing between the two parties.

On Saturday (September 24, 2022), the US Central Command instructed the removal of the leader of the "Maghawir Al-Thawra" faction, Colonel Muhannad Ahmad Al-Tala' from his position, and also appointed a person named "Farid Husam Al-Qasim" to lead the faction, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The faction was formed on May 20, 2015 under the name “The New Syria Army,” and included in its ranks the groups that had been established during the war, and consisted of soldiers who defected from the Syrian army.

As for the reason that prompted the coalition to isolate “Al-Tala’a”, it suddenly went to Iraq to open the Zuriya crossing, where it told its members that it was going to coordinate with the Iraqi side in this regard, according to the observatory.

The same source published information about the new faction leader, “Farid Husam al-Qasim,” as he served as the commander of the “Al-Qaryatayn Brigade,” and also worked with the international coalition led by the United States of America within the Special Forces.

The decision to appoint “Al-Qassem” was rejected by the members of the faction, which is stationed at Al-Tanf base within the 55-kilometer area, accompanied by the coalition forces, but a meeting took place between a number of leaders to discuss the matter among them.

It is noteworthy that the aforementioned faction was deployed in the strategic Al-Tanf area, near the borders with Iraq and Jordan on November 16, 2015.

In December 2016, the “New Syrian Army” was dissolved and a group of it formed the “Maghawir al-Thawra Army” led by Abdullah al-Zoubi and Muhannad al-Tala’, whose total number is about 300 members.

The faction is mainly cooperating with Washington to provide surveillance in the 55-kilometre area surrounding the Al-Tanf crossing, to ensure that the international road between the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, and the Syrian capital, Damascus, continues to be cut off.
